TCMB Conference in Antalya, Turkey

Antalya, 10 October 2019 - “What really struck me was that despite being outside the ETS (European Emissions Trading Scheme) and facing considerable economic challenges, the Turkish cement industry has such a focus on sustainability, in particular on energy efficiency and alternative fuels,” said Ian Riley, WCA CEO, who has this week been attending the TCMB’s (Turkish Cement Manufacturer’s Association) International Technical Seminar and Exhibition in Antalya, Turkey.

The biannual conference was centred this year on the theme of “Towards a Circular Green Economy and Digital Transformation”, as a result of a continuous effort by the cement industry to reducing resource use, increase system efficiency and minimise waste in operations.

The conference was opened by WCA board member and TCMB deputy Chairman, Suat Calbiyik, who spoke about the challenges facing the Turkish industry and their commitment to sustainability.

Mr RIley then spoke about the key trends driving changes in the industry: Sustainability, Innovation and Internationalisation, and explained how WCA was helping its members through knowledge sharing and acceleration of new technologies. WCA encourages members to embrace a goal of full decarbonisation by 2050 and this is the focus of much of the Association’s work.

WCA members Oyak Cement, Nuh Cement, Fives Group, KHD Humboldt Wedag and FLSmidth were also present at the conference.  Both FLSmidth and KHD Humboldt Wedag spoke, giving speeches on the first operational results of KHD’s latest pyro-processing innovation for co-processing waste without the need for pre-processing, and the digital explosion that is driving productivity gains across the cement industry respectively.
